Week of Feb. 13

Posted by vleeds on February 13, 2012 in Uncategorized |

Monday:  Write one well written paragraph about one thing you’re grateful for.  Make sure your paragraph has:

-A strong introductory sentence and conclusion sentence-remember that they should”sandwich” your piece.

-6=11 sentences

-No less than 12 425 words or phrases:  specific details or sophisticated transition language

Tuesday:  Note:  homework is differentiated depending upon your score on your last prompt.

If your score was 9 or less:  Write a new prompt response to the question “Should our community (Durham-Middlefield) create a new skate park?“  Just like any other prompt, it should about three pages be hand written on lined paper, using every strategy you have learned on how to write a prompt response.  Time yourself-no more than 45 minutes total!  Due Thursday, 2/16.

If your score was 10 or higher, please write a new editorial on the same issue you chose before, but this time you must take the opposite position to the one you already took.  If your research gave you enough facts to support this postion as well, you do not need to do more.  If not, yes, you need more research.  That’s why this paper is not due until Tuesday 2/21.  If I were you, I’d try to get it done by Thursday to enjoy the long weekend!

No additional homework until next week!

Week of 2/7-2/10

Posted by vleeds on February 10, 2012 in Uncategorized |

There was no homework every day except one this week because we were doing CMT review.  The one assignment for homework is to write a one page handwritten paper.  You get to pick the topic, but it is about “The Best thing About…”  Make sure your topic is one that you can be very positive about and know (and include in your writing) lots of SPECIFIC DETAILS.  Oh, don’t forget all the other things you know about good writing.

Week of Jan 17-20

Current events roundup-to write an opinion piece.  By Friday you must obtain copies of 3 or more news articles on a topic that interests you.  The issue should be one that affects preteens or teens, local people, or people in Connecticut.  It needs to be an issue that reasonable people can disagree about and that we have the power to change.  So international issues and crimes that a judge decides will not work.  For example, no matter how upset you are about the cruise ship that sunk off the coast of Italy, we cannot do anything about it, and virtually all reasonable people will think that the captain and the cruise line did things wrong.  Maybe you want to learn about the issue of the minimum wage law and how it affects teen employment.  Or the new law making it a crime to harass or bully online.  How about the proposal to redistrict the state which will split Durham’s district in half (Patch has been covering that one)?  You do not need to start writing yet, just start collecting your articles and maybe even editorials about the issue of your choice.
